Huaxia Edison Taiji Club
Huaxia Edison Taiji Club (Huaxia Taiji Club) was established in early 2003 and is affiliated with Huaxia Edison Chinese School. For three years, Huaxia Taiji Club has been actively promoting Taiji in the local communities. The Club offers its members the opportunity to achieve correct posture, controlled breathing and graceful movements. Instructed by Master Sitan Chen, who holds two titles as World Taiji Champion, our club has reached an advanced level under his direction.
The club has thirty members and can perform Taiji Quan forms 8, 16, 24 and 42, Taiji Sword forms 16, 32 and 42, as well as the Taiji Gongfu Fan. In recognition of the club's contribution to community, the Middlesex County Culture and Heritage Mini Grant has been given to the club for the last three years.
Currently, there are 30 members in the club. The club has stopped enrolling new members because of classroom size limitations. All new applicants will be put on a waiting list for the 2006 season.
Mission Statement
Promote the awareness of Tai Chi (Taiji), an ancient Chinese martial art form, as an excellent exercise for the modern busy life. Exchange ideas and improve skills. Serve the community through demonstrations and distribution of other educational materials.
Requirements
A new member has to meet the following 3 requirements:
- Must have taken Taiji Quan 24 class with Master Chen Si-tan.
- Must have taken Taiji Sword 32 class with Master Chen Si-tan.
- Must fulfill the obligation of at least 2 performances a year for the club in public.
Annual Membership Fee: $140 (Sept.2005 - Aug.2006)
Membership Obligations:
Participate as least two performances for the club in public. Join the weekly practices and take classes during the Chinese school hours.
Club officers
The club's governing body consists of a president, a vice president and a treasure. The president serves a one year term. A vice president is elected by the club members each year and automatically become President the following year.
The treasurer is elected by the club members and serves a two years term.
Club Plan (Fall 2008 - Sprint 2009)
Club Goals:
- Improve members' learning experience
- Improve members Taiji skills and understanding of Taiji
- Enhance the communication between the Teacher and members
- Enhance the content of the club's web site
Plan:
- Learn basic Taiji principles
- Learn to feel and appreciate the completeness of a form
- Enhance basic Taiji movement skills. Members learn to demonstrate the meaning of defense in 2-3 movements each semester.
- In each school week, use one class period to practice basic Taiji skills and one class period to practice forms.
- Encourage active learning
- Reinforce positive learning/teaching experience
- Encourage idea exchanges and feedback
The teacher will focus on one basic Taiji principle in one class week.
Students will practice and learn to experience the basic principles in various forms.
Focus on the completeness, smoothness and gracefulness while practicing a form or a section of a form
Teacher Chen will lead the class practice when he sees the needs
First class: Basic skills and movements
Second class: Complete forms
Fall 2008: Focus on the improvement of Yang Style 40 and Taiji Sword 42. Practice other forms as well
Sprint 2009: We will determine the focus based on the progress and feedback from Fall 2008.Encourage members in all levels to ask questions during the class
Encourage members and the teacher to communicate with the teacher when a certain technique or learning experience works very well
Collecting positive learning experiences and tips and publish them on the club's web site
- Encourage members to write short articles and publish them on the club's web site
- When needed, allocate a short class period to exchange ideas for improvement
- Exchange feedback between the teacher and members promptly
- Allocate the last class of the semester for demonstration of forms and basic skills
Requirements to Members:
- Start every class on time
- Respect the teacher while the teacher answering questions or providing instructions
